French Alpine Massifs: Where to Go Hiking?

Published on Mar 04, 2026

The Alps are one of the largest playgrounds for hikers in Europe. This mountain range stretches over more than 1,000 km across several countries, but the French Alps alone already offer an incredible diversity of mountain ranges and landscapes.

From one valley to another, the atmosphere can change dramatically: vast glaciers, limestone cliffs, lush alpine pastures, or remote and wild mountain ranges. Some areas are perfect for a first mountain hike, while others are better suited to experienced hikers familiar with alpine terrain.

To choose the right destination, it helps to understand the characteristics of each massif: landscapes, alpine lakes, viewpoints, wildlife, flora, and famous long-distance hiking routes.
